Is my market big enough?

A market size calculator in plain English. Put in how many people have this problem, how many of them you could actually reach, and what you’d charge.

Rough is fine. Count the group you could actually name.

Be harsh: count the people who will actually hear about you.

If every one of them paid

$50,000 a month

2,000 people out of 40,000, paying $25 each month.

Big enough that reach won’t hold you back. Next, find out whether the first hundred will pay.

Copies these numbers as text. Paste them into Draper and it will use them as you work through your idea.

How market size is worked out

Market size = people with the problem × share you could reach × price

Say 40,000 people have the problem, you could realistically reach 1 in 20 of them, and you would charge $25 a month.

  • 40,000 × 1 in 20 = 2,000 people you could reach.
  • 2,000 × $25 = $50,000 a month if every one of them paid.

That is the most the market could pay you. Most of the people you reach will not buy, and how many do is what you still have to find out.

Getting the first number right

Count the people who have this problem now and would recognise it in your words. Everyone who could in theory use the product is a much bigger number, and it makes every answer below it too big.

Groups someone has already counted make good starting points: a type of business in your region, the members of a community where the problem keeps coming up, owners of the product yours works with, or how many people search for the problem each month.

From market size to paying customers

A big enough market is a reason to keep going. It doesn’t show that the people in it want your version, or what they would pay for it.

Draper starts with that question: whether people want it, and who they are. Then it works through the plan, brand, product and website with you, and helps you find your first customers. Copy your numbers with the button above and paste them into Draper, and it will use them as you work through the idea.

Once you have a price in mind, the break-even calculator shows how many of those people need to buy each month to cover your costs.

Market size questions

Once you’ve landed on an idea, Draper works with you to turn it into a business.

It checks the idea holds up, designs the brand, builds the website and helps you find your first customers.
